Messiah softball team scores late runs to beat Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG -- Messiah College scored four runs in the seventh inning in an eventual 9-3 win over Gettysburg on Wednesday, collecting a win in the first game of a double-header.

The Falcons also won game two, 3-2.

Junior right-hander Jocelyn Hickey went seven inning for the Falcons in the first game, allow five hits and three runs. She struck out four batters.

Messiah got on the board early thanks to a two-RBI double from senior Jaclyn Merkel. Junior Stephanie Schell would follow Merkyl with a double of her own to plate her teammate and give the Falcons an early 3-0 lead.

The Falcons, leading 5-2 after six innings, broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single by Amanda Fife setting up an RBI groundout by Seneca a few batters later. Two unearned runs would also be given up the Bullets in the frame.
