Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays have granted the request of slugger Vladimir Guerrero to be released from his minor league contract.

The Blue Jays had signed Guerrero to a minor league contract about a month ago.

Guerrero reportedly gave the Blue Jays an ultimatum to either promote him to the majors or release him. Toronto decided to do the latter.

The 37-year-old veteran hit .303 with four RBI in eight games with Triple-A Las Vegas. Guerrero also batted .450 with four homers and eight RBI in four contests with Single-A Dunedin.

Guerrero played for Baltimore in 2011 and batted .290 with 13 homers and 63 RBI over 145 games.

Over 2,147 career MLB games, the nine-time All-Star has clubbed 449 home runs to go along with 1,496 RBI and a .318 batting average. He has played for Montreal, the Angels, Texas and Baltimore in his career, winning the 2004 AL MVP with the Angels.
