CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The South Atlantic League's Home Run Derby will begin in an unlikely spot - the flight deck of the USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor.
The league says the 10 competitors will face off on the aircraft carrier on June 18, the day before the South Atlantic League all-star game at Riley Park. The championship round will take place on June 19 at the ballfield prior to the all-star game.
There will be five batters each from the league's Northern and Southern divisions. They'll each get 10 swings in an inflatable batting cage. Kayakers and jet skiers will retrieve the balls from the harbor and the U.S. Coast Guard will track the longest home runs to determine the four finalists.
