Eleanor Engle, first woman to sign pro baseball contract, dies

The Harrisburg Senators signed Engle to a contract in 1952, but she never had a chance to play for the team in a game. Her contract was promptly voided by minor league president George Trautman and Major League Baseball commissioner Ford Frick.

Eleanor Engle will never be forgotten by the legions of women who play, coach, umpire, and love the game of baseball. A true champion, she rose above the despicable treatment she suffered at the hands of George Trautman and Ford Frick, and endured the slings and arrows of an unforgiving press with dignity and class. Eleanor Engle may be one of baseball's unsung heroes, but her place in baseball lore is secure.
