HARRISBURG -- Penn State Harrisburg called on some Olympic power to help raise money for its athletics program.

U.S. Olympic shot putter Ryan Whiting was more than happy to attend the event at Colonial Golf & Tennis Club.

"I believe in remembering where you came from," said Whiting, a graduate of Central Dauphin High School. "I just like helping the community. It's a good cause. I came from a D-1 athletic department, but all athletic departments are important to their schools."

Whiting, who attended Arizona State, finished ninth at the 2012 London Olympics.

He said his father earned a degree at Penn State Harrisburg.

PSU Harrisburg is currently a member of the North Eastern Athletic Conference, but next year the school will be joining the Capital Athletic Conference and plans on adding more sports in the future.

Former members of the Hershey Bears, including goalie Freddy Cassivi, also attended.
