LANCASTER - Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy threw out the first pitch Tuesday and Jesus Merchan knocked in three runs as Lancaster won its home opener 7-2 over Somerset at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Merchan came through with a broken bat one-hopper past shortstop Rex Rundgren that scored two runs during a four-run first inning. Brad Boyer tacked on an RBI single one out later as Lancaster went up, 4-1.
McCoy's appearance was also a fundraiser for his foundation, which raises funds and awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). McCoy’s grandmother, Maryann Branch, recently passed away as a result of ALS.
A representative for the Bishop McDevitt product said McCoy would not speak to the media; preferring to keep the focus on the fundraiser and not McCoy's contract situation.
John Halama (1-1) earned the win for the Barnstormers, allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) in a six-inning stint. Kody Kirkland homered for Lancaster, as well.
