Mark Freeland is free to race - a pretty remarkable feat considering how his car looked after at crash at Williams Grove.
The Newport racer lost control of his car after an axle broke during a hot lap at the Grove on July 10. Freeland's car smashed into pieces before coming to rest outside the dirt track.
"I knew it started flipping," Freeland told CBS 21 News Sports Director Jason Bristol on Thursday. "That had never happened to me before. I really didn't know what was going on."
Freeland was dazed but walked away with an injured shoulder. He can recall with ease what happened when the car finally came to a halt - on its side outside the track.
"When I looked up I saw the roll cage broke on my left side," he said.
Freeland has a slightly separated shoulder, but feels lucky he wasn't more seriously hurt because his roll cage came apart. "I knew things weren't good but everything felt good and I got out of the car," he added. "The only thing that really hurt was my shoulder and across the top of my back."
"All my safety equipment did its job."
Freeland has a slightly separated shoulder, but is ready to race again. In fact, he was planning on driving at the Grove the following weekend, but the event was rained out.
