MECHANICSBURG – Brent Marks held off a hard-charging Brian Montieth to claim the sprint car feature at Williams Grove Speedway by only .067 seconds -- or a half car length. It was that close.
In the URC sprint feature, pole-sitter Daryn Pittman lead the entire way to record the victory, his eleventh of the season overall in both 410 and 360 sprint competition.
Marks started seventh in the 25-lap sprint main and advanced into fourth on the first circuit while New Jersey’s Davey Sammons held control. The Myerstown driver slid up in front of Sammons in the second corner for the lead with seven away only to see Sammons battle back on the inside as the pair ran down the back chute. But Sammons lost control of his mount as the pair dove side by side into the third corner, bringing out the red flag after backing the car into the outside turn three wall.
On the last lap, Montieth pulled up beside Marks on the inside at the finish line, but Marks held on for the win. “It’s really tough to keep them behind you, especially when the track’s like this,” Marks said. “This is the best place to win in the country, everyone knows I won here tonight so that’s pretty cool!”
Following Marks and Montieth was Lance Dewease, Greg Hodnett and Chad Layton.
Pittman led the entire 25 laps of the URC feature to win over Chad Layton, Pat Cannon, Dave Ely and 15th starter Lance Dewease.
Cannon held second from laps 13 through 22 before Layton surged back into second after some sideswiping action with Cannon high in the second corner. “I’d take this thing anywhere in the country when we put this motor in,” Pittman said of his Rider Racing Engines 360 power plant. “We ran two cars tonight, didn’t hurt anything and was competitive with both so it was a real team effort."
Pittman was one of several drivers who competed in both sprint car classes on the night.
West York's Jeff Rohrbaugh claimed his first 358 sprint feature win this season Friday at Trail-Way Speedway.
