MECHANICSBURG – World of Outlaws points leader Donny Schatz made history at Williams Grove Speedway on Saturday night by winning the $50,000 National Open and becoming the event's first-ever five-time champion.
Schatz held on for the victory by .890 seconds over a tenacious Brian Leppo; Cody Darrah, Daryn Pittman and Friday night's prelim winner, Paul McMahan finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
It took six attempts to start the 40-lap affair.
Leppo briefly took the lead more than halfway through the race before Schatz drove back around for control.
Darrah was all over Leppo for second with two laps to go and the pair was directly behind leader Schatz as the white flag was cast over the star-studded field.
Sixth through tenth went to Stevie Smith, Lucas Wolfe, Lance Dewease, Sam Hafertepe Jr., and Greg Hodnett.
Schatz’s previous National Open wins came in 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2007.
McMahan was the last car to take time under the clock in the 54-car field and set quick time with a lap of 16.366 seconds.
