PORT ROYAL – Port Royal Speedway canceled its 60th annual Labor Day Classic due to rain the race will not be made up.
Nearly three inches of rain fell on the speedway overnight Sunday and with a dismal forecast for the balance of the day and drizzle falling, the race was called off.
However, another race during the 157th annual Juniata County Fair will determine who gets crowned The Foss Jewelers 2011 Labor Day Champion. “The Port Royal tradition of awarding a Labor Day Champion is one of the oldest if not the oldest sprint car racing tradition in the country and officials want to keep the annual record intact,” PRS Promotions Public Relations Director Shawn Brouse said in a statement.
Racing action during the fair concludes with the 44th annual Tuscarora 50 this Saturday, September 10; and the champion will be announced based on average finishes in all the completed feature events of the week. Two other races remain, as well; including Friday's Living Legends Dream Night.
Only drivers who qualified for and started all the mains will be eligible for the title and a $500 prize.
