Emmert: Happy with Penn State response to sanctions

NCAA president Mark Emmert speaks during a press conference at the NCAA's headquarters to announce sanctions against Penn State University's football program on July 23, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The sanctions are a result of a report that the university concealed allegations of child sexual abuse made against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who was found guilty on 45 of 48 counts related to sexual abuse of boys over a 15-year period. DETROIT (AP) - NCAA President Mark Emmert says he is happy with the way Penn State University is responding to the sanctions handed down after the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse scandal.

Emmert gave a speech on Friday to the Detroit Economic Club.

After he told reporters what while the Penn State football team's 1-2 start gets most of the attention, he's been focused on the off-the-field activities.

Emmert says the school is "taking very seriously" the athletic-integrity agreement it signed. Former Sen. George Mitchell is involved in overseeing its implementation.

Emmert says: "That's the part that is going to create serious change in the Penn State culture."
