Sid Bream was slick around the first base bag. In fact, he finished second in the National League in fielding percentage for first basemen in 1988.
But his critics at the time wanted to see more from him offensively.
"All they see is the surface stats," Bream told former CBS 21 News reporter Kurt Gregory, who spoke with him during the spring of 1989. "They don't see what's underneath (those statistics)."
Bream later produced one of his best seasons since his first full year in the big leagues. However, it came a year later, in 1990.
He suffered knee problems in 1989, missing a month before being sidelined for good after May 28. He finished the 1989 season with just a .222 average in 19 games.
