A Republican-penned bill that would pave the way for state takeovers of Pennsylvania school districts veering toward financial collapse has the support of Gov. Tom Corbett and is advancing in the Legislature.

Two public school advocacy groups says a survey shows more districts expect worsening finances even as they cut instructional programs and personnel in numbers unheard of since the Great Depression.

Plan raises tuition and includes plans to reduce workforce.
