HARRISBURG -- Nate Mahon is the new football coach at Central Dauphin East High School.
Mahon, a former East assistant, spent this past season as a wide receivers coach at Bishop McDevitt.
This is his first head coaching position. His hiring was approved by the school board on Monday night.
"I wanted the job because its a great place to be," said Mahon shortly after being hired. "I feel like knowing the kids and being here previously, I know what they can accomplish.
"I feel like I'm the right person for the position."
Mahon replaces George Chaump, who was let go by the district on November 14. Chaump guided the Panthers to only their second playoff appearance ever in 2011, his first season at East; Mahon was on Chaump's staff that season, as well.
East finished 3-7 in 2012.
Mahon has also coached at the college level at Cincinnati, University of Indianapolis, and Miami (Ohio). He played at Miami, as well.
His wife, Jinene, is the head soccer coach at Central Dauphin.
