To truly understand what kind of person Michael Platzer is, all you have to do is look at his paintings. “I need to keep painting constantly,” says Michael. “Someday, I’ll be really good.” A modest man to say the least. Michael’s masterpieces are sold by the dozens; such intricate detail that you can’t help but wonder, “how did he do that”? But to actually see how he does, would amaze even Picasso.
“I had a diving accident in 1975, May of ’75, when I was 12,” Michael describes. Michael was paralyzed. He had special braces fitted onto his hands to hold pencils so he could do his homework. A few years later, those same braces held paint brushes, but he couldn’t quite get the hang of making a straight line, until…he had an idea. “I grabbed it with my mouth and made a straight line, so I thought why use the devise on my hand when I can use my mouth and do a better job,” says Michael. From then on, Michael’s mouth became his hands, known in the art world as, The Mouthpainter. “The number one reaction I get is "I can't even draw a straight line with my hand" and my reaction is "don't worry, I can't either!”,” Michaels says while laughing. His paintings are a lesson in life that’s hard to ignore. One that Michael inevitably teaches everyone he meets, artist or not. “Art is in your head and your heart it's not in your hands, it comes from within,” Michael says. “You will find a way to express yourself and put it on paper if you have the will to do it.”
