UNIVERSITY PARK -- Milton Hershey graduate Garry Gilliam tops the Penn State depth chart as one of the team's two starting tight ends.
Football coach Bill O'Brien released his post-spring practice depth chart on Tuesday. It reveals numerous position battles that will intensify during preseason training camp in August.
Gilliam, a redshirt junior from Carlisle, is returning after missing the 2011 season with a knee injury. True freshman Jesse James is Gilliam's backup at the "Y" tight end spot.
"There will be a lot of position battles to determine starters during training camp," O'Brien said in a statement. "Quarterback and a handful of other positions are the only ones that I feel are set at this point."
O'Brien announced last Friday that fifth-year senior Matt McGloin would be the Nittany Lions' starting quarterback. Redshirt sophomore Paul Jones is his back-up on the depth chart.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Carter, of Bear, Del., and junior Kevin Haplea are listed 1-2 at the other tight end spot, or "F" position.
The Nittany Lions face the first of 10 bowl opponents from last year when Ohio visits Beaver Stadium for the Sept. 1 season opener to kick off Penn State's 126th season.
Senior defensive tackle Jordan Hill's 17 career starts lead all returning defensive players. Hill attended Steel-High.
