COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Two-time Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir is skipping the rest of the season to prepare for the 2014 Winter Games.

The three-time U.S. champion did not compete for two years after the 2010 Olympics but announced a comeback last January. He withdrew from a Moscow tournament in November after the short program. He finished fourth at a competition in Finland to start the season.

Weir said in a statement released by U.S. Figure Skating on Friday that he is proud that he was able to return to competition despite "many obstacles and detours."

But he says he has not been satisfied with his performances and "combined with the stress of competing, I feel that I need to take a step back."

Weir trains in Hackensack, N.J., with coach Galina Zmievskaya.
