MILLERSVILLE - Millersville sophomore right-hander Chris Murphy has been named the Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) for the second straight week.
Murphy nearly threw a perfect game Sunday at Glenville State, tossing a seven-inning no-hitter against the Pioneers. He struck out 13 batters, marking the most by a PSAC pitcher in a seven-inning game since 2005. He faced one batter over the minimum, did not walk or hit a batter and came within a fielding error of a perfect game.
Between the fourth and sixth innings, he struck out seven of nine batters. Glenville State did not hit a ball out of the infield the entire game. Of the 84 pitches he threw, 64 were strikes.
The NCBWA awards are voted on by sports information directors and NCBWA members in each region.
In three starts for the Marauders, Murphy -- a transfer from TCU -- owns a 1.80 ERA with 27 strikeouts against just two walks with 13 hits allowed in 20.0 innings pitched.
He also handed No. 6 West Florida its first and only loss of the season on February 7 and also won his Millersville debut against Winston-Salem State.
Murphy's no-hitter was the third by a Marauder since 2007.
