Age for treatment

Formerly, it was believed that adults were not good candidates for orthodontic treatment because their jaws had stopped growing and the jawbone was too dense. Orthodontists now know that idea was wrong. Even though at certain times in childhood more extensive orthodontic treatment can be achieved in a shorter period, orthodontics will work for many adults. Some corrections, like expanding the palate, may not be done in adults without surgery. But procedures like palate expansion can be accomplished in children with appliances alone. Modern braces are more comfortable and less noticeable than ever before, making tooth correction for adults and children more cosmetically pleasing and easier to tolerate. Adults may choose unnoticeable braces that are clear, tooth colored, or attached behind the teeth. Kids can have fun wearing colored, or even glow-in-the-dark braces. Orthodontic procedures may be done at any time in your life, from as young as five or six up to sixty or seventy. Contact an orthodontist or dentist for more information on when you or your children should start orthodontic treatment.
