Proper bird care consists of three main factors: housing, nutrition, and sanitation. A bird's cage should be large enough for the bird to fully extend its wings and have enough room to exercise. Cage bars should be closely spaced to prevent escape or injury, and cage doors should open out instead of up and down. Paper towels or cage pads, but not newspapers, should line the cage, and at least one perch should be provided. All toys should be lead-free, and glass mirrors are never recommended. A bird's nutrition is best ensured, not by a diet of only seeds, but by one that is well-balanced. Such a diet can be mixed by hand or bought in pellet form. Birds also need both vitamin and mineral supplements. Proper sanitation consists of cages being thoroughly cleaned at least once a week.
