PPL Electric Utilities is warning customers to beware of telemarketers or door-to-door salesmen who may be claiming to be our employees.

The company says it does not engage in telemarketing or door-to-door sales for the purpose of encouraging residential customers to switch energy suppliers.

The company also says it may contact you by phone about your account or service in the event there is a problem with the service. They also say virtually all visits to customer homes by PPL Electric Utilities or contractors are prearranged by the customer or through a call to the customer.

They say all employees and contractors carry company issued identification.  If someone claiming to be from PPL Electric Utilities comes to your door, ask to see this identification.  All employees also wear company uniforms and drive marked company vehicles.

If you ever have any doubts about a caller or visitor claiming to represent PPL Electric Utilities, or about the information you are being asked to provide, please call 1-800-DIAL-PPL (1-800-342-5775) for verification and remember to call your local police department if things don't check out.

This reminds me of a similar scam discussed at http://www.callercenter.com/blg/articles/electric-company-phone-scam/ where the scammer poses as a utility company rep and demands payment for an unpaid bill. I'm wondering. Where do these scammers get the information about the victim?
