Officials have charged Kevin Souffrant with criminal homicide for the death of Shadae Taylor-Brooks.
Souffrant has been in jail for previous charges since his release from the hospital, and will be arraigned on this new charge.
Police are still investigating this case, and anyone with information is asked to call Lancaster City Police at 735-3300.
Lancaster City Police have filed multiple charges against the 35-year-old man who was shot last Saturday, Kevin Souffrant. He lives in the apartment where the homicide took place.
Souffrant has been described as both a boyfriend and an ex-boyfriend of the deceased, according to police.
Police say an investigation determined Souffrant had a handgun, and he threatened Taylor-Brooks and everyone inside the apartment at the time. Aside from Souffrant and Taylor-Brooks, there were two other women and four children under the age of five.
Police say he pistol whipped Taylor-Brooks twice before her death. While the pistol whipping was happening, police say the two other women were able to escape the apartment with three of the four children. They were unable to take Taylor-Brooks' 6-month-old with them.
Souffrant faces several charges, including aggravated assault, violation of uniform firearms act and endangering the welfare of children.
The investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to call Lancaster City Police at 735-3300.
Lancaster Police are not saying much about the city’s most recent murder that happened over the weekend where a mother of two was gunned down in her own apartment.
Police have not released any new information on the murder. What we know is a woman is dead and a man is in the hospital recovering from gunshot wounds. At this time, there is no one in custody.
Neighbors Jocelyn Juarbe and Jamaal Williams live just a few door down from where the double shooting happened over the weekend. They have plenty of questions and few answers after a very stressful weekend.
“This is a quiet neighborhood, but this is really discomforting having something like this,” commented Williams. “It’s a scary thing. You never know what can happen to anybody.”
The shots were fired around 4:40 a.m. Saturday morning at the Lancaster Court Apartments on the 1100 block of Wabank Road.
A 35-year-old man was hit and taken to the hospital, while 21-year-old Shadae Taylor-Brooks was shot multiple times and died. Witnesses tell CBS 21 they heard fighting coming from the couple’s apartment moments before the shooting.
Brooks’ two young children may have been home at the time. Both adults lived in the apartment. Police have not commented on their relationship.
“It kind of puts you on edge a little bit. It’s edgy around here,” Williams said. “It’s scarey, but we’re managing little by little.”
“Whatever happened, it’s not fair what happened to the mother,” Juarbe told us.
We are told the man is in stable condition and police do not believe the public is in danger. If you have any information on this murder you are asked to contact Lancaster City Police.
