Two arrested for stabbing incident over 'American Idol'

Two people from York County are behind bars for stabbing each other, following a disagreement about American Idol.

According to officials, on May 15, Karen Elaine Harrelson, 48, and Gregory L. Stambaugh, 57, were watching "American Idol" in the basement of Stambaugh's home in Manchester Township. The couple got into a drunken argument over which contestant should win this season's "American Idol" title.

Police say one of the two went to the kitchen, got a knife, and stabbed the other person.

When police questioned the couple, both said the other person stabbed them first.

Both were treated at York Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Harrelson and Stambaugh were both charged with two counts of simple assault and one count of aggravated assault, according to the affidavit.

Harrelson remains in York County Prison in lieu of $30,000 bail. Stambaugh is also in York County Prison in lieu of $70,000 bail.

Parents sue Pittsburgh Zoo in boy's mauling death

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The parents of a 2-year-old boy who was fatally mauled after falling into a wild African dogs exhibit last fall have sued the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, claiming officials had ample warning that parents routinely lifted children onto a rail overlooking the exhibit so they could see better.

The lawsuit filed Thursday on behalf of Jason and Elizabeth Derkosh seeks unspecified damages in the Nov. 4 death of their son, Maddox. The boy fell from a wooden railing after his mother lifted him up to get a better look at the painted dogs.

According to the lawsuit, other zoos across the country have more and better safeguards in place to keep children safe while viewing the dogs.

A zoo spokeswoman did not immediately comment on a statement released by the family's attorney and a copy of the lawsuit.

©2013 Associated Press.
Search resumes for child missing in deadly Minn. landslide

Recovery efforts have resumed for a little boy who disappeared at the site of a fatal landslide in a St. Paul park along the Mississippi River.

A fourth-grade field trip to a Lilydale Regional Park turned deadly Wednesday when gravel saturated by persistent rain gave way, killing one child and injuring two others. A fourth child is still missing.

CBS Station WCCO reports the four children from Peter Hobart Elementary in St. Louis Park were walking together, searching for fossils, when a hillside gave way. They were swept into a hole, which then filled with water.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene, and they were able to pull one boy out immediately. A second had water up to his waist, and it took an hour to pull him out. A third child died.

Rescuers said they believe a fourth is still buried.

When emergency crews got to the scene Wednesday afternoon, many rushed straight down the hill and started frantically digging with shovels and their bare hands. Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard estimated it took another half-hour to reach the buried child as more workers and equipment were moved in.

A firefighter was injured by a falling rock but was expected to recover, Zaccard said. Another firefighter suffered a back injury.

The search was suspended Wednesday night after conditions made it too dangerous.

One child remains hospitalized in serious condition on Thursday.

The students were among 49 fourth-graders from two classrooms on the field trip from Peter Hobart Elementary School in St. Louis Park.

School is resuming as normal Thursday, but grief counselors are on hand for those affected by this tragedy.

Vote expected Thursday on allowing openly gay Boy Scouts

The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America is scheduled to vote Thursday on changing the group's long-standing ban on openly gay Boy Scouts.

The resolution on the table would not allow youth scouts to be excluded based only on their sexual orientation, but the ban on gay adult leaders would remain in place.

Leaders with the Boy Scouts of America are gathering in Texas just outside the national head quarters for their annual three day meeting.

The topic gaining national attention: a vote on whether to allow openly gay scouts into the organization.

The issue has divided many associated with the organization.

Scout Master, Don Smith, has been a Boy Scout troop leader for more than 30 years.

He joined scouts and parents in a rally Friday, May 17th in Mechanicsburg, opposing any change to the membership guidelines.

"The existing policy does not restrict who can join, it's an inclusive policy from that level, it does however limit behavior that can be conducted once you join," says Smith, Scout Master of Troop 107.

Currently, as long as a scout doesn't talk about being gay, he is permitted to join and maintain membership.

Zachary Brillhart, Senior Patrol Leader of Troop 304 says, "It currently does not ban gays, it's just that we don't want them to be open about it. We want everyone to be on the same level."

Pro-gay groups argue the same consideration needs to be given to any scout, regardless of sexual orientation.

The results of the vote are expected to be announced Thursday afternoon.

You can count on CBS21 News to follow the verdict.

Look for updates on-air and online.

Joey's journey back: Pitcher still recovering two years after hit to head

HARRISBURG -- A teenage baseball player who dreamed of playing in college is still dealing with the effects of a traumatic brain injury from being struck in the head two years ago by a line drive.
Joey Bishop, who graduated from Mechanicsburg High School, would like to resume his playing career -- he just isn't sure how to go about it.

Bishop, a right-handed pitcher, who hit by a batted ball during a game at Lower Dauphin in April 2011. "I was down like this," explained Bishop while demonstrating the end of his pitching motion. "So I couldn't see it and it just hit me and everything went blank."

"It was scary," said Mechanicsburg coach Clay McAllister of the incident. "I'm not going to lie to you.

"It was real scary."

Just two weeks later, Bishop had enough courage to get back on a mound after being cleared by doctors. He recorded the final out in the 2011 District 3-AAA Championship game against Twin Valley at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York. Bishop wore a protective helmet.

It should be the ending to to great comeback story. It wasn't.

Two years later, Joey Bishop has no team; no one to throw to and no idea of what's next -- mostly due to being hit in the head.

"He's a very driven kid," said Charlotte Bishop, Joey's mom.

Charlotte Bishop doesn't understand baseball. But she knows her son. She says while he looks fine on the outside, he's still not right on the inside.

After being hit in the head, doctors discovered bleeding on his brain and a concussion -- a traumatic brain injury.

He suffered from terrible headaches; had trouble focusing and remembering even simple things like a sentence he just read. "I hated not being able to remember any thing," said Joey Bishop.

"He does go crazy not remembering," added Charlotte Bishop. "It's always driven him nuts; not being able to remember. He's learned to deal with it and that's because there's nothing he could do (about it)."

No wonder his grades dropped and colleges became less interested.

Still it could have been worse.

"Technically, if you get a hit with a line drive (from a pitch), it can be lethal," said Dr. Matthew L. Silvis of the Penn State Hershey Medical Group.

Dr. Silvis treated Joey Bishop extensively. He says he's much more concerned with traumatic brain injuries in younger athletes than older ones because it usually takes them longer to recover. "We think of them being these little plastic creatures that get better fast, no matter what the injury," added Silvis.

"A concussion's different."

Each athlete is different, too.

CBS 21 News asked the York Revolution to take a look at Joey Bishop at an open try-out back in April.

The Revolution agreed.

Joey Bishop hadn't pitched in five months.

Revolution manager Mark Mason's advice to Joey afterward was simple: "I think your best avenue would be to go to college," suggested Mason.

Bishop still hopes college is an option. He's been working two jobs after spending part of a semester at a local community college.

He's slowly getting better.

He loves baseball.

He just wishes baseball will love him back. Maybe even provide him with some direction.

"Make something of myself," said Bishop, who is also interested in coaching or playing in an adult league. "School got hard after the whole head injury.

"Here (on a ball field) I can just do my own thing. It's (just) natural."

Natural for Joey Bishop to lean in, through the haze of that head injury, and look for a clear sign of what to do next.

City park in need of clean up, but funds needed

When it was all completely refurbished to coincide with the opening of the Civil War Museum back in 2001, much of Reservoir Park was breathtaking, now not only are parts an eyesore, but potentially dangerous as well.

Nora Levan says she doesn't like to be in the park at night. "At nighttime it is scary up here."

At first glance this is a beautiful place, but then you take a closer look and you see weeds and trash. Carli Timpson was going to bring her wedding reception to the pavilion. "When we actually came out to look at the place it was very much in disrepair, there are missing floorboards and there is spray paint, but it would have been beautiful, nice open windows for a summer wedding."

From broken glass, to poison ivy, to weeds that are as tall as you are, how did this fountain go from a point of city pride to an embarrassment? It all comes down to money.

John Campbell is the Executive Director of Historic Harrisburg Association. "The longer this goes the more of the investment that we put in disappears, where the reality is we could lose everything." He said.

Nora Levan added, "I think if the community got together and everybody worked together we'd look a lot better."

According to John Campbell, "Reservoir Park historically was a place for gathering during the 1900s, during the city beautiful movement."

Harrisburg hopes to repeat history with "City Beautiful 2.0", 100 years ago Harrisburg was a national role model.

"Taking urban centers and making green space for the community to participate." John said.

He is also the Harrisburg City Treasurer. "The city does not have the capital resources to invest in what we have, so there is an initiative underway called "City Beautiful 2.0", as a play on what happened historically to be able to revive the conversation, to be able to raise resources so we can prevent blight."

Nora Levan summed thing up, "This is my home, my kids go here, my family is here, I need to care about this."

The Tour De Belt coming up on June 2nd comes right though Reservoir Park.

Areas around the fountain remain open to the public, but if you are very allergic to poison ivy, visiting may not be a good idea.

To find out about you can help this park and Harrisburg, go to http://www.CityBeautiful2.org.

Local principal warns parents about new social media app

A local middle school principal is alerting parents about a new App that kids are using to post videos called Vine. This one does not have privacy settings, so anyone can see the videos.

Kids are talking about "Vine" at Linglestown Middle School and teachers are listening and telling the principal. He recently sent parents an email about the dangers of the App.

Dad Tom has heard of it, but when it comes to his son, he won't let him use Vine. "Probably not, knowing what the app is and the potential for what it can do and people who can in fact prey on that," Tom Castanzo, parent.

Vine allows you to create and post video. Clips are 6 seconds long and can be shared on Twitter and Facebook. There are no privacy settings, which bothers Linglestown Middle School Principal David Wright. "The problem was they're putting things out there in the public eye that anybody could see and anybody could do anything with," said David Wright, Linglestown Middle School Principal.

The rules say you have to keep your cell turned off and inside your locker at Linglestown Middle. Some kids break the rules, but Wright says the issue isn't about phones at school, it's about Vine. "It's almost like holding up a sign for a predator and saying here I am, here is where I go to school, this is my name, this is what I look like come find me," said Wright.

Earlier this year, Vine added a '17 and over rating' saying that the app contains age restricted material. The change comes after users uploaded pornographic clips. But even though the rules now say you have to be 17 or older to use the app, there are ways of getting around that.

Apple says it requires a new user to enter a birth date, but there is nothing to confirm a user's age, making it easier for youngsters to download the App.

Parents can set age restrictions, by App, on iPhones and iPads through the devices "general settings." It is recommended you check your child's smartphone and iPad to monitor what they're doing online.

Former PSU President Spanier seeks dismissal of criminal charges

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Former Penn State president Graham Spanier is asking a county judge to throw out criminal charges accusing him of helping to cover up abuse allegations against former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

Spanier's lawyers last week filed the motion, citing his allegation that the university's former top lawyer violated attorney-client confidentiality when she gave prosecutors information about him.

He's also arguing that some of the charges were filed after the statute of limitations had run out.

Spanier remains a faculty member while fighting the accusations that he and other administrators committed crimes as they responded to complaints about Sandusky, who was convicted last summer of 45 counts of child sex abuse.

Spanier was charged in November along with former athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz.

©2013 Associated Press.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Dozens of employees of the Pennsylvania auditor general's office are in line to be laid off because of budget cuts.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Wednesday (http://bit.ly/183PehE ) that the affected workers have been offered help with unemployment benefits and finding other work.

The layoffs are expected in mid-June, unless the state budget includes more money than expected for the governmental watchdog body.

Officials with the agency say they've also been cutting its vehicle fleet and making other changes to save money.

The layoffs will leave the auditor general with a workforce of 476 people.

©2013 Associated Press.
New contender in race for Harrisburg mayor? It could happen.

Eric Papenfuse is the Democratic nominee for the Harrisburg mayor. He won last nights primary and will be taking on independent Nevin Mindlin in November.

However, a new contender could be in the ring once all of the write-in votes are tallied up.

Starting Friday morning, officials with the Dauphin County Board of Elections will look into all of the write-in candidates which, if the requirements are met, could mean for a new Republican contender come November.

"Winning a playoff game doesn't mean you're going to win the championship," said Mindlin.

On the Democratic ticket, Papenfuse came in leading with 2,480 votes winning the vote. City Controller Dan Miller came in second with incumbent Linda Thompson in third. Lewis Butts came in fourth place, and there were 2 write-ins.

While there were no registered Republican candidates, 424 voters chose to write-in a candidate. Now, the Dauphin County Board of Elections will go through all of the write-ins. Each write-in candidate have to reach at least 100 votes before being added to the ballot -- the same for all races from the Mayor to a school board member.

"This is going to be very thorough," said Jerry Feaser of the Dauphin County Board of Elections. "It's a process, methodical, for each precinct and it's an important of the democratic process as it should be."

Officials say it could take some time, as late as next week before the full count is tallied up. All write-in candidates for every race in Dauphin County will be announced at once.

Two York County communities voted to reverse a liquor ban.

Dillsburg and Dallastown are no longer considered dry towns.

Dallastown restaurant owner Salvatore Candela says it’s a change he has been waiting years for.

He says at his Italian eatery, he’ll now be able to offer customers wine or a beer with their meals.

Candela says he will not apply to be able to see mixed drinks.

He told CBS21 that he thinks offering customers the option of wine or beer, or a 6 pack to go with take out, will keep business in the town of Dallastown.

Mayors in both Dallastown and Dillsburg had opposed the reversal.

You know they are digging through to find the smallest little thing to you know, give them hope,” Courtney Jackson.

President Obama is visiting Moore on Sunday. His Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano was there Wednesday and said she's impressed with how the community is pulling together to recover.

“To top it off, I understand high school graduation will occur on-time in this community
this weekend,” remarked Napolitano.

A pile of rubble used to be a heart clinic. The twister blew cars into the lobby and leveled the building.

“This is the first time I've been through here since they pulled me out,” stated Heart Clinic Supervisor Sandi Jones.

Clinic supervisor Sandi Jones says she still can't believe that she, and 13 other people survived after the walls came crashing down on them.

“I really didn't think I'd be talking to you today,” Jones added.

The Oklahoma medical examiners office says two infants, four and seven months old were among the 24 people who were killed.

An army of volunteers cleaned up a tornado damaged cemetery Wednesday.
Former Infantryman tells his story in "Every soldier has a story"

Nearly 70 years after Clarence Hibbs was an infantryman, his stories of the Battle of the Bulge have been published in a book. “Every Soldier has a Story” was not authored by a biographer. It was the work of his grandson.

Clarence Hibbs had just graduated from high school. He was drafted into the Army’s infantry in 1944. He quickly found himself in the middle of a major German offensive campaign, the Battle of Bulge.

“We were good friends,” said Hibbs about a friend he saw hit by a mortar round. “There’s nothing I could do to help him.”

Clarence Hibbs is 87 and lives in Mt. Pleasant Mills. He was an educator in Juniata County for 40 years. But before he graduated from Penn State, he was a soldier in World War II. His grand-kids enjoyed hearing his stories as they grew up. One so much that he decided to write a book.

“It is a neat experience,” said Lincoln Hockenbrough, grandson and history teacher at Lititz Christian School. “I cherish and appreciate what grandpa did. I definitely feel closer in the journey the book has taken us Lincoln Hockenbrough is a history teacher at Lititz Christian School.

Some of his stories are funny, such as his lesson on why you never volunteer in the Army…even hiding in bushes for three days from the Germans brought a slight grin. He remembered there were no weekends. He didn’t sleep in a bed for six months. And when he slept it was never longer than four hours. Living in a fox hole in sub-freezing weather was an unforgettable experience.
The death and dying were painful, especially when he lost his friend Tex from Harrisburg.

“We were just looking for booby traps to see if things are going to explode,” Hibbs said. “They had us zeroed in with mortars and one came in and hit Tex. He wasn’t good to look at.”

Tex was sent for medical care. Hibbs remained fighting the war.

“A couple days later the sarge says you must go get his personal things together to send them home to his parents,” Hibbs recalls. “I didn’t have a shaving brush. So I said, “I’m keeping this.”

The name of the book is “Every Soldier has a Story.” You can buy the book at www.lulu.com.

Dauphin County Commissioners to take on blight

Dauphin County Commissioners are taking on blight in run down neighborhoods, thanks to a new state law.

They created the Dauphin County land bank. It's dedicated to buying and restoring run down properties. Municipalities will work with the land bank to point out vacant homes in the area, from there the bank will then fix up, or tear them down to make room for new homes.

The bank's start up money will come from the county's share of gaming revenue from Hollywood Casino.

They're also considering using inmates to assist with property demolition as a way to save money and provide job skills training.

Star behind the scenes of Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy talks about hit game shows

Broadway is always an amazing place, but Wednesday our destination is about 12 blocks south in the great city of New York.

With Wheel you always get a taste of the unusual, not only is it fabulous foods week, but in the audience was the star of Spiderman on Broadway and CBS 21 contest winners had a chance to experience it all.

“I'm excited about the 30th anniversary,” exclaimed one person in attendance.

The last two days you've had a chance to meet Pat Sajak and Vanna White, Wednesday you get to meet Harry Friedman, the star of the show behind the camera.

Harry has produced more than 6,000 episodes of both Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! He was more than willing to answer several of our questions.

“One of the things we say about both shows; is that they are reliable, but never predictable,” commented Executive Producer Harry Friedman. “So with Wheel of Fortune it a great play along, especially for families with young kids to learn their letters that way.

A big part of Harry's job is the keep the show fresh.

“We try to stay current with trends both socially and societally, so sometime that will certainly influence the puzzles of Wheel of Fortune, the categories on Jeopardy,” Friedman addressed. “As long as we know who our core viewer is because if we go too far in one direction or another, then we are going to lose the audience that got us here.”

Of course, Wheel has expanded beyond television.

“Technology is our friend, because we find that people like the connection to the game,” explained Friedman. “They love the connection to the show.”

They have games that are hugely popular on iPhone, iPad and on the android platforms.

For Wheel will there be a 40th anniversary?

“I sure hope so. When you are on the set today you are going to see Pat and Vanna engaged in the show and I find that remarkable,” gushed Friedman. “Pat knows what is going on the entire time, it is like having another producer on the floor.”

Wheel and Jeopardy continue to thrive, but is there room for another hit game show?

“I would think so. We'd love to see more game shows come along because it validates our genre, not that we really need validation, but we do know that things tend to go in cycles,” Friedman addressed,

Harry put the rumors to rest about a new host for jeopardy.

“We just renewed Alex's contract through 2016 and despite the speculation, he is on board,” addressed Friedman. “I think never been better, he is having a good time, no one does a better job and we hope he'll stay forever.”

Want to be a contestant?

“Watch the show and you'll understand the rhythm, the pacing, with Jeopardy it's what material we tend to have more offers, with Jeopardy we offer the online test a couple of times a year,” Friedman informed us.

“In both cases a lot of our best contestants are avid readers and on Wheel of Fortune some of our best contestants are crossword puzzle players,” Friedman told us.

Now if you do make it on Wheel?

“Buy vowels, it's the best bargain on the show,” chuckled the producer.

IRS executive in charge of personal health care under scrutiny

We don't know how much Sarah Hall Ingram knew about the targeting, while serving as Commissioner of the IRS field office in Cincinnati. That's the same office under intense scrutiny and congressional review.

Ingram now oversees the IRS' Affordable Care Act Office, tasked with enforcing health care laws. Among them, is deciding which business or individual gets a tax break.

Dave Swartz is with the 'Americans for Prosperity', a grassroots group that was not targeted by the IRS. He says he doesn't think she should be in that position. "She can not be the person that implements our health care. I don't think the public trust is there for that to happen."

Senior White House Advisor Dan Pfeiffer defended Ingram, saying she has done nothing wrong. A new Washington Post/ABC poll found that 56% of Americans believe the IRS was deliberately intrusive of tea party groups. "Confidence in government has become an oxymoron, trust in government has become an oxymoron. We are at a almost a historic low, in terms of the level of trust the average American places in government entities." Said Michael Franc with the Heritage Foundation.

And with the same IRS executive now in charge of something as personal health care, well, Franc says it will give rise to yet, another level of distrust.

How much access will the IRS have to our medical history? Consider that just this week, a class action lawsuit was filed against the IRS for, according to the suit, stealing the medical records of roughly ten million people.

Congress has been busy drilling and grilling those involved in the IRS targeting incident.

Ingram has been decidedly absent from the hearings so far. "They have great powers, police powers if you will and if they get the sensitive information and they issue it, having access to sensitive health information, this could be abused as well." Said Congressmen Joe Pitts. Pitts is the chairman of a subcommittee on health and says while Congress can't fire Ingram, there may be other options. " It has caused some members say perhaps we ought to defund this arm of the IRS."

Additionally Senator John Thune is questioning the justice department about Ingram, asking whether she is part of its criminal investigation, and suggesting Obamacare regulations be halted. As far as what may be done, IRS employees could be asked to resign or put on administrative leave by higher ups in the agency, but most employees involved are actually covered by protections for federal workers which would drastically drag out any sort of termination process.

The White House has defended Hall-Ingram

Meanwhile it's becoming clear while no one's giving up on finding out all the details, they also aren't expecting those details to emerge anything but, slowly.

Former member of Lower Dauphin School board appears in court

A former member of the Lower Dauphin School Board was in court on Wednesday, facing severe charges including child rape. His attorney tried to convince a judge many of the charges against him should be dropped. But the judge disagreed.

Rodney Nissley, 47, didn’t say anything in court and showed no emotion as his accuser, a young teenage girl, explained in detail the alleged sexual abuse. After his preliminary hearing, Nissley quickly made his way to his car. He refused to give any comment.

Nissley, a former member of the Lower Dauphin School Board, faces 13 counts including rape of a child and incest – even though the girl is not a blood relative - and if found guilty could spend the rest of his life in jail. In court, his accuser took the stand to explain the alleged acts – which are too graphic to mention.

"She is very brave," said prosecutor Sean McCormack

McCormack commends the young girl for coming forward. She said the abuse started seven years ago when she was in elementary school. The defense tried to discredit her since she couldn’t remember all the details, which McCormack says is standard. And this type of harsh scrutiny causes many victims to stay quiet.

Added McCormack, “This was a girl who came in here and had a lot of courage today to talk about things that happened to her. I think it's extremely difficult and this is one of the reasons. It's the type of situation where if you do come forward you wind up having to testify about this."

Nissley, who’s a husband and father of three boys, waived his formal arraignment. He will next appear in county court sometime after July. No date has been set. He is out on bail.

Pa to share in custody of Bill of Rights

Governor Tom Corbett today announced the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and The New York Public Library have entered a historic 100-year partnership allowing an original copy of the Bill of Rights to be seen by the public for the first time in decades.

The document, currently at The New York Public Library (NYPL), will go on public display in Pennsylvania for the first time at the National Constitution Center (NCC) in Philadelphia beginning in the fall of 2014. It will stay at the National Constitution Center until 2017.

As part of the historic agreement, the center will display the document to the general public for three years starting in the fall of 2014.

In 1789, each of the 13 states and the federal government received a handwritten copy of the Bill of Rights. Of those copies, 12 are known to have survived.

The document has been stored at The NYPL since 1896 after acquiring it through a donation. It has been the subject of scholarly debate as to whether it is Pennsylvania’s original copy of the Bill of Rights.

New York’s copy is believed to have been destroyed in a fire and Pennsylvania’s went missing in the 1800’s. Now, through this historic agreement, both Pennsylvania and New York will share alternate “custody” of the document allowing it to be seen by more people than ever before.

“This is a win for Pennsylvania, New York and the citizens of the United States,” Corbett said. “For the first time in decades, this historic document will be seen by ‘We the People,’ the people who were granted these inalienable rights and privileges that we are still guided by today.”

The NYPL hasn’t displayed the document in decades, but has shown it over the years to researchers. It has never been displayed for an extended period of time for preservation reasons.

“This landmark agreement makes public one of the most important documents in the nation’s history, an over 200-year-old, original copy of the Bill of Rights,” Library President Tony Marx said. “The document has been expertly preserved at the library for more than a century, leaving it in prime condition and ready to inspire and educate the public now and in the future.”

The 100-year agreement between Pennsylvania and The NYPL requires the document be housed in a qualified institution within the commonwealth. The National Constitution Center meets that requirement.

“This is a milestone moment for the National Constitution Center as we celebrate our 10th anniversary and look toward the next decade as the museum of ‘We the People,’” NCC President and CEO Jeffrey Rosen said.

”We are thrilled to be able to offer visitors the opportunity to experience one of America’s founding documents up close. In addition to exploring the historic value of this priceless document, our exhibition will provide a national forum for discussion, education and constitutional debate about contemporary issues related to the Bill of Rights.”

According to the agreement, the document will be displayed alternately by the library and Pennsylvania equally for the first six years. After that, the library – which is responsible for care of the document – will have it 60 percent of the time that it can be displayed.

For more information, visit www.pa.gov.

HIA: Traffic stays even with last year

The Susquehanna Area Regional Airport Authority (SARAA) reported today that 106,508 total passengers used HIA during April 2013 which was a decrease of less than one percent compared to April 2012. A year-to-date total of 398,997 passengers have used HIA in 2013.

“While January to April 2013 traffic is down 3.9 percent vs. the first four months of 2012, the decline is a direct result of flight reductions in January and February—the two slowest travel months of the year,” said SARAA Board member Fred Sembach. Business travel to Denver, Phoenix, Charlotte, Chicago and Atlanta remains strong as all five destinations have posted significant increases in 2013 traffic.

4th suspect arrested in 2012 murder of Lancaster County man

State Police say another person suspected of killing a Lancaster County man inside his own home has been arrested.

Police say Emlyn Jones was taken into custody yesterday in Media, Delaware County.

They say she aided in the August 2012 killing of Douglas Herr, 62.

Stephen Harmer of Lancaster County, and brothers Cody and Kyle Wunder from Delaware County were previously charged with Herr's death.

The District Attorney says they were after 200 thousand dollars that was left behind after Herr's wife died.

Officials say they were able to get ahold of some of it after fatally shooting Herr during a struggle inside his Drumore Township home.

The Vietnam vet didn't go easily and fired off a shot hitting Cody in the leg.

Then, police say his brother, Kyle, fired the fatal shot to Herr's head.

Officials say Cody got treatment for his leg at a hospital near Delaware County, and that may be what alerted police to them.

Jones now faces charges for aiding consummation of crime, hindering apprehension of prosecution and receiving stolen property.

Officials say she helped conceal the shotgun and prybar used in Herr's homicide, and got away with anywhere between 55-65 thousand dollars.

Jones is currently in Delaware County prison.

Sequestration hits Memorial Day events nationwide

Courtesy Military.com:
by Richard Sisk

A small but resolute band of sequestration-busters showed up on the National Mall Sunday to honor the fallen of World War I despite the official cancellation of the annual event leading up to Memorial Day due to the Congressional budget cuts.

“It’s a sign that we remember,” said Melinda Tomaino, president of the American Legion auxiliary at the Kenneth H. Nash Post 8 on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

She was joined by Barbara Rich and Alicia Fansmith, also members of Post 8, in placing two wreaths at the District of Columbia’s World War I Memorial, dedicated in 1931 by President Herbert Hoover, that mostly goes unnoticed a short walk from the imposing World War II Memorial.

“Remembrance of our veterans who sacrificed all should not be sequestered,” Rich said.

The three women held a brief moment of silence to honor those who served in what the inscription on the D.C. Memorial said was “The Great War For Civilization.” Earlier, Rebekah Wilson, an Army Iraq veteran, had placed small U.S. flags along walkways leading to the Memorial just off Independence Ave.

And that was it in the way of ceremony for what had been an annual gathering going back to 1976 to kick off Memorial Day events.

There were no speakers, no representatives from D.C. officialdom. There was no playing of “Taps,” no folding chairs for whoever might have attended in remembrance of the 499 District residents who fell in the Great War alongside 116,000 other “doughboys.”

The National Park Service withdrew its support for the District event, which usually came to about $1,000, because of the five percent cuts in the NPS’ budget of about $2.75 billion that were forced by the impasse between Congress and the Obama administration on deficit reduction, said Mike Litterst, an NPS spokesman.

Sequestration could result in more than $1 trillion in federal spending cuts over the next 10 years to include more than $500 billion for the Defense Department. Those cuts have been felt in the national preparations for Memorial Day.

MORE

DeWeese lawyers to press appeal before court panel

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Lawyers for former state Rep. Bill DeWeese are due in court to make oral arguments on his appeal.

Three Superior Court judges will preside over Wednesday's hearing.

The former Greene County lawmaker contends procedural errors by judges and misconduct by prosecutors constitute grounds for overturning the jury's verdict or granting him a new trial.

The 63-year-old DeWeese is serving two and a half to five years at Retreat State Prison in northeastern Pennsylvania for illegally using public employees and resources for political purposes.

The Democrat served in the House for 35 years, including two as speaker.

He was the only sitting legislator to stand trial in a state corruption probe that resulted in the arrests of 25 Democrats and Republicans connected to the House. Most of them were convicted.

©2013 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
Police: Franklin County man jailed for abusing baby

A Franklin County man is behind bars on child abuse charges.

State Police say a six month old boy suffered several broken bones including both of his legs, right arm and several ribs.

The baby was transferred to Penn State Hershey Medical Center earlier this week, where doctors determined the fractures were consistent with child abuse that spanned a two to three month period.

Troopers charged Dustin Sipes, 21.

They say he's the child's mother's boyfriend and helped in watching the infant.

Outside of the mayoral primary. York City's other race garnering a lot of attention was actually a special election.

Eugene DePasquale's 95th District seat in the House of Representatives was up for grabs. This is because of DePasquale’s move to the position of Auditor General.

Walking up to a crowd of people with DePasquale looking on, Kevin Schreiber was jubilant.

Pointing around town, saying I was born there, proposed to my wife there and we won here.

Kevin said he has big shoes to fill, but he was confident in his message from the beginning.

To hear exactly what he had to say, click on and watch the video.

Mayor Thompson is not re-elected, says voters have spoken

The mood at the Thompson campaign headquarters as the numbers were coming was good. Spirits were high and everyone was optimistic.

“I think I'm feeling real confident we got this thing in hand,” commented Thompson supporter John Colden.

But, in the end it wasn't meant to be. Thompson who was Harrisburg's first African American and first female mayor, lost to Eric Papenfuse.

It was a rough four years for Mayor Thompson, she inherited a financial crisis, had a city council that seemed to always be against her and she made many gaffes.

With all of that, the voters decided it was time for a change. This is what Mayor Thompson said to her supporters after conceding.

“It's an honor to have been a mayor of this city. I think the voters have spoken,” conceded Thompson. “They are looking for change and I accept that with much humbleness. It really is about the will of the people and I will make sure the transition is done smoothly. And so I go out with my head high and not hanging low and know that God's on the throne and that there are better days ahead.”

Mayor Thompson will now serve out her term until the next mayor is sworn into office in January of next year. But of course, it's not over yet. There is a still a general election and that will be in the November.

Papenfuse wins democratic primary, beats incumbent Linda Thompson

Eric Papenfuse beat incumbent Linda Thompson Tuesday night. He thanked his family and mostly the community that helped him get here.

His supporters embraced Papenfuse as he walked into the Midtown Scholar Bookstore, which he owns. Then he gave his acceptance speech and was very excited. Papenfuse spoke to CBS 21 News about beating Mayor Linda Thompson in this primary election.

" She ran a terrific race. She deserves a lot of credit. We ran, because we wanted to bring the city together. I think we showed tonight that you can compete in every precinct of this city. We can unite this city, we can do great things, if we work together," said Eric Papenfuse, winner of Democratic Primary, Harrisburg Mayoral Race.

Papenfuse says he plans to win in November, against Independent Nevin Mindlin, by working hard and building the on progress he's made so far.

Severe weather season approaches, are you prepared?

The devastation that we have seen in Oklahoma, should remind us that we are not imumne to severe weather and tornado damage. In 2004, there was the massive Campbelltown tornado, and more recently a swarm of tornadoes just two years ago.

We are heading into our severe weather season ... are you ready?

The Campbelltown tornado of 2004 was an EF-3 with winds of up to 200 miles per hour. Pat Quigley is a survivor and will never forget the date and time. "July 14th, 2004 around 3pm. I just closed my eyes and said God please let my mom and girls be okay. I just see our neighbors house in the middle of the street. I just stopped and lookedand the two houses to ours we're completely leveled." Pat's daughter was 22 months old at the time of the tornado and was in the house when the tornado hit. "She was just sitting in her crib and thankfully fine, no widows blew out in that room. The month afterwards that's tough because you never stops thinking about it, we were displaced for five months."

"It wasn't like a regular storm." said Michelle Flynn who was 14 when the storm struck. "My knees broke the basement door in half, so I ended up getting like 40 stitches in my knees. I still hate thunderstorms."

It is important for your safety that you know the difference between a tornado watch and warning. A tornado watch means, conditions are conductive to the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area. While a tornado warning means, a tornado has been sighted by spotters or indicated on radar and is occurring or imminent in the warning area. If you see this warning, stop what you are doing and get yourself and your family to a safe place.

The disaster of the campbelltown tornado did have a small silver lining. "You go through something like that, your house is gone and you look for each and you just hug each other and it brings you closer." Quigley said.

The Campbelltown tornado was on the ground for seven and a half miles and it was a quarter of a mile wide.

FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has a host of tips and plans including an emergency supply kit lists, now is a great time to check your families readiness. For more information visit FEMA's website http://www.ready.gov/make-a-plan.

They're great,” exclaimed contest winner Jenny George.

You can always expect something new on Wheel, this week is fabulous foods week. One thing that you have been able to count on since she joined the show in November of 1982 is world record holder Vanna White.

“Most frequent clapper, I have clapped more than anyone,” Vanna explained. “I have clapped more than anyone, over three million times over thirty years.

“When I was eating that alphabet soup at three years old I never thought it would pay off,” Vanna chuckled.

“From the time I was ten years old I always wanted to be in front of the camera, I wanted to be on TV or in movies and just pursued it, I never gave up,” White explained. “So when I graduated from high school, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, which was a little city, but bigger than North Myrtle Beach and I lived there for five years and then in 1980 I thought it is time to take the big step to Hollywood.”

Since then Vanna hasn't looked back.

“It is hard to believe that it has been 30 years,” gushed Vanna.

“I think people think of me as their next door neighbor, because I am in their living rooms every night, so it’s like hey Vanna how are you, how is the cat? How are the kids? You know it is just more natural and normal,” Vanna believes.

You see Vanna every night but never in the same gown, so far she has worn more than 6,000.

“I have a stylist who gets all these gowns from different designers, they send them to the studio, I try on probable a hundred gowns and pick like the top ten, because we are doing ten shows and then I wear them and they go back, so I don't get to keep any of them,” commented Vanna.

The contestants keep their amazing prizes.

“I remember one time a gentleman won a brand new car and he said, I don't have to take the bus any more, that was very special and we change people's lives and that is just amazing and of course we had a million dollar winner, that changed her life instantly,” Vanna told us. “It is so much fun, it really is and i hope it continues on for many more years.”

For her success, Vanna gives the credit to you.

“Thank you so much for watching and enjoying our show, really we wouldn't be here without you,” Vanna told all her viewers.

Vanna told Kirk that she and Pat in 30 years of working together have never had an argument.

Would you like to be on the show? Wednesday, Kirk talks with the star behind the scenes, the Executive Producer of both Wheel and Jeopardy and give you some tips on what it takes to make it as a contestant.

Family starts LEEK Hunting Preserve to give wounded warriors the chance to recover

A local family has dedicated their lives to helping our wounded warriors.

After retiring from the U.S. Army, Ed Fisher and his wife Kate wanted to give back to those who gave so much.

What started as a simple dream, turned into a sanctuary for injured veterans returning from war.

“I said you know what we can do something to help these returning vets,” recalled Ed Fisher.

“As a military wife, I have to say the idea was very close to my heart also,” agreed Kate Fisher.

The idea was simple.

Give wounded warriors a chance to hunt, fish and recover, no matter how severe their injuries. That's when LEEK Hunting and Mountain Preserve was born.

On 140 acres of land in Potter County, PA, Ed, Kate and Ed's brother and sister-in-law built a sanctuary.

A place for wounded veterans to once again be the people they were before the war took a part of them away.

Every aspect of the preserve is accessible. For an entire week, the veterans experience the outdoors no matter the obstacle.

But Ed soon learned it was much more than that

“The hunt becomes secondary,” Ed explained to us. It’s about them, the time they spend together and the relationship they build with each other.”

LEEK has been host to 120 wounded veterans in the five years it has been operating.

To Ed and Kate, the reward has been simply priceless.

“At the end of the hunt they come up and they say, oh Ed thank you,” explained Ed. “We really appreciate you and your family for putting all of this on and I'm there like, ‘man no, thank you! For what you've done because I'm never going to be able to give you back that piece of your body, that piece that was damaged so bad, I can't do that for you but I can make sure that you're service and sacrifices are never forgotten and this is one small way that we do that.’”

The development of LEEK is far from over.

Ed and Kate say their main goal is to one day incorporate the entire family on the week-long outings to make it a healing process for everyone, not just the wounded warrior.

LEEK is a non-profit, 100 percent run by volunteers so all money donated goes to the program.

If you'd like to volunteer or donate, click on Find It.
