SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A consumer watchdog group is suing the Federal Trade Commission in an attempt to prevent Google from making sweeping changes to its privacy policies next month.

The planned revisions would enable Google to bundle the personal information gathered by its Internet search engine and other services so the company can gain a better understanding of its users and potentially sell more advertising.

But the Electronic Privacy Information Center contends Google's policy switch will violate restrictions imposed in an agreement reached with the FTC last year. A lawsuit filed Wednesday by the group is trying to force FTC to enforce those rules. The complaint also is seeking a court order to block Google's policy changes from taking effect March 1.

European regulators already have asked Google to delay the policy changes.

©2012 Associated Press.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Madison Square Garden Co. said Wednesday that the shortened NBA season drove its second-quarter profit down nearly 22 percent.

The lockout delayed the start of the regular basketball season by about two months. As a result, the New York Knicks only played a combined six preseason and regular season games during the quarter, compared with 40 in the same period last year, cutting into its revenue.

Madison Square Garden, which owns several sports franchises, sports networks and entertainment venues, reported that it earned $25.6 million, or 33 cents per share, for the quarter that ended Dec. 31st. That's down from $32.7 million, or 42 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Revenue fell nearly 14 percent to $373 million.

The decline in revenue was almost entirely due the NBA work stoppage, which sent its MSG Sports segment revenue down 31 percent. The company also saw a smaller 15 percent decrease in MSG Entertainment revenue due to the absence of a Cirque de Soleil performance that wrapped up in 2010, which was partially offset by holiday performances.

The company's media segment revenue fell 1.2 percent due to lower advertising revenue tied to fewer NBA games being televised on its network and the expiration of an affiliate agreement.

Madison Square Garden owns sports teams such as the New York Knicks and New York Rangers, puts on events such as Radio City Christmas Spectacular and hosts events at its variety of venues including New York's Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall.

Shares of the company rose 48 cents, nearly two percent, to $30.25 in midday trading.

©2012 Associated Press.
OAK BROOK, Ill.
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Caterpillar Inc. has ruled Illinois out of plans to relocate a factory and 1,400 jobs from Japan. The Peoria-based heavy-equipment maker cited both logistical problems and ongoing concerns about the state's business climate.

Caterpillar laid out its decision Tuesday in an email to leaders in Peoria County. The county was one of fewer than a dozen Illinois locations trying to win the new plant.

In the email, the company says it considered factors including port access and labor markets in deciding Illinois won't work. The email also says a key factor was proximity to Caterpillar's division headquarters in Cary, N.C.

Caterpillar spokesman Jim Dugan would only say Wednesday that a location will be announced by April 1st.

Gov.
