Recap: Oakland vs. Chicago Cubs
Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Jonny Gomes hit a leadoff solo homer to spark a three-run bottom of the ninth inning that helped the Oakland Athletics earn a 5-5 tie with the Chicago Cubs in spring training Tuesday.
The A's trailed 5-2 entering the half-inning. After Gomes homered off Blake Parker, Cuban slugger Yoenis Cespedes doubled and Cedric Hunter knocked him in with a single.
Anthony Recker then grounded into a double play, but Adam Rosales walked and Kila Ka'aihue sent the game to an extra inning with a tying RBI double.
Parker threw a wild pitch that moved pinch runner Eric Sogard to third, then retired Cliff Pennington for the third out.
The Cubs stranded a runner at second base in the top of the 10th and the A's left two men on in the bottom of the inning when Cespedes grounded into a double play.
Earlier, Josh Vitters hit a leadoff single in the top of the ninth, went to second on a wild pitch and scored with two outs when Michael Brenly reached on a throwing error by Pennington to give the Cubs a 5-2 lead.
Ka'aihue had a solo homer for Oakland and starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy gave up four runs -- two earned -- on five hits in four innings.
Rodrigo Lopez allowed one run on three hits in five innings for the Cubs, striking out four.
