Bubba Watson double-bogeyed his final hole
Sunday to fall into a tie for first with third-round leader Alex Prugh after
the fourth round of the Bob Hope Classic.
Watson finished with a three-under 69, while Prugh had a two-under 70. The
pair is knotted atop the leaderboard at 23-under 265 and will wait for a
Monday finish to determine a champion.
The Monday finish was required after weather problems early in the week. That,
coupled with the fact this is the only 90-hole championship on the PGA Tour,
meant everyone is back on Monday for the final round.
"I think it will be a little different feel," said Prugh, who is making only
his third PGA Tour start.
There was no golf on Thursday as inclement weather postponed all action. The
start of the second round on Friday was delayed until 2:00 p.m. (et), so the
golfers went out in twosomes off split tees on all four courses in the
rotation - the Arnold Palmer Classic Course at SilverRock Resort, La Quinta
Country Club, and the Jack Nicklaus Private Course and Arnold Palmer Private
Course at PGA West.
The Palmer Private Course has Monday's final round.
Watson's 69 was at the Nicklaus Private Course on Sunday. Prugh shot his 70 on
the SilverRock Course.
Bill Haas and Tim Clark both carded rounds of six-under 66 on Sunday and are
knotted in third place at minus-22. Joe Ogilvie posted a four-under 68 at
LaQuinta and is alone in fifth at 21-under 267.
Watson should've been alone as well, just he should be the outright leader.
He came to the 18th tee with a two-stroke cushion and found the fairway off
the tee. Watson, a lefty, pulled his approach into the water guarding the 18th
green.
Watson placed his ball after several drop attempts resulted in the ball going
backwards. He chipped his fourth almost five feet past the stick and missed
the bogey putt coming back.
Watson tapped in for a double-bogey that cost him sole possession of first.
"I was sluggish all day," admitted Watson.
The Florida native, who had six birdies, including four from inside 10 feet on
the back nine, and a bogey before his horrendous finish, is looking for his
first PGA Tour win.
So too is Prugh.
He started on the 10th tee Sunday and recorded his first birdie at the par-
five 12th. Prugh bogeyed his 10th hole, but atoned for the error in a big way
with three birdies in a four-hole span from No. 2.
After a nice par save at six, Prugh's good fortune ran out just before the end
of his round. He missed a three-footer for par at the ninth, but holed a putt
from a similar distance to save his bogey.
"It could have been worse," said Prugh. "In a nutshell, it was not too
exciting a day, but kind of kept it together."
Mike Weir (67), Matt Kuchar (65), Kevin Streelman (64) and Martin Flores (72)
are tied for sixth place at 20-under 268. Ryan Moore shot a five-under 67 and
is alone in 10th at minus-19.
NOTES: The 72-hole cut fell at nine-under 279 and first-round leader Shane
Bertsch made it on the number thanks to a one-under 71 on Sunday...Justin
Rose, David Duval, Scott Verplank, Jesper Parnevik, Chad Campbell, Justin
Leonard, Boo Weekley and Rickie Fowler missed the cut...Sam Saunders, the
grandson of Arnold Palmer, also missed the cut...Defending champion Pat Perez
posted a two-under 70 on Sunday and is through four rounds at 13-under 275.
